The payout of the €500 bonus has started. The money comes directly to the account or as a voucher by mail, which is essential now.
The “super bonus” will be paid out much earlier than initially planned – 300,000 Austrians will receive it immediately, all others in September. Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler and Finance Minister Magnus Brunner made people sit up and take notice on Wednesday with this hammer announcement.
For every adult registered in Austria, there are 500 euros, 250 euros each from the increased climate bonus and the anti-inflation bonus for children up to 18 years half. All those who have entered their current account data on FinanzOnline will have the money transferred directly to their account.
And the others? They will receive a whole pack of vouchers in 50-euro denominations as an RSa letter.
“You can use these at more than 10,000 acceptance points or redeem them for cash at Bank99,” the environmental department explains.
Everyone living in Austria gets the “super bonus” – regardless of citizenship or age. The only restriction is that they must have been registered here for at least six months in 2022. So anyone who only moved here in July will miss out on the money.
The future annual payout will be financed in part by revenue from the CO2 price, which will be introduced in October 2022. From 2023, the climate bonus will the regionally staggered – as initially intended.
The bonus amount will then depend on how good the infrastructure and public transport connections are in the area where the person lives. Due to the dense public transportation network, Viennese residents will receive the least, while rural residents will receive the most.
“Since the switch to climate-friendly alternatives is currently still difficult in some regions of Austria, however, the climate bonus will also be higher there,” explains the Climate Protection Ministry. In principle, climate-friendly behavior – i.e., using the public transport system instead of the car – is to be rewarded.
Gewessler’s department celebrates this as a “new chapter for climate protection” in Austria: “Because if you look after our climate, more of the climate bonus stays in your wallet.”
