The holidays passed almost all over the country with a surprisingly warm thaw. Now it is getting a bit cooler again; frosty nights are imminent.
On Sunday, under the influence of high pressure – starting from the western Mediterranean Sea – a weather-calming foehn southwesterly current is established over the Alps. On Monday, a weak cold front approaches from the northwest, causing a temporary temperature drop on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Today, Monday, there will be partly tenacious ground fog or high fog at Lake Constance, in the southern valleys and basins, and the lowlands of the north and east. In the day, the moisture on the northern side of the Alps will be replaced by compact cloud fields, and towards evening rain will start with the rise of a cold front in the west. The snow line will initially be at 1700 m, dropping to around 1500 m in the evening hours.
In the south, it will remain dry even then, and after fog dissipates during the day, the sun will show up from time to time with only harmless clouds. The westerly wind will blow weakly to moderately at first, freshening up rather briskly from the west in the Danube region in the evening. With 4 to 14 degrees Celsius, it will remain mild.
Tuesday will start in the west and the northern Alps with dense clouds and rain, or above 800 to 1000 m with snow. In addition, isolated showers will pass through in the south; here, the snow line will be at 1500 m. Otherwise, sunshine will dominate from the beginning and precipitation will subside during the day. In addition, moderate to brisk and partly foehn westerly to northwesterly winds will blow in the Danube region and at the eastern edge of the Alps.
Highs will reach 2 to 11 degrees. However, temperatures will drop a bit during the night – frost is expected almost all over Austria.
On Wednesday, a mix of sunshine and passing compact cloud fields will develop across the country. Sometimes, persistent fog or high fog will persist in the lowlands and basins. With light to moderate winds from southerly directions, a maximum of 0 degrees will be reached in some shady valley locations and up to +9 degrees in the Rhine Valley.
Little change in the weather is expected on Thursday. Sun and clouds will alternate, and local fog or high fog may linger a bit longer. Some rain is most likely in the west and northwest in the day’s second half, but it will mostly remain dry again. Snow is only an issue in the high mountains. The wind will blow partly moderately from the south, and temperatures will reach 3 to 11 degrees.
