The government’s electricity subsidy will be increased once again. Larger households with more than three people will now get extra money.
The government announced a new cash bonus this week in a surprise move. The motion for the necessary amendment to the Electricity Cost Subsidy Act was sent to the parliamentary parties late Tuesday evening, and Wednesday, as of 10 a.m., the decision was already made during a special session of the National Council.
The facts at a glance: The money bonus is only available for households with more than three people per metering point primarily registered. There are 105 euros per person in addition. Parents with one child (3 persons) get nothing; if three children (5 persons), 210 euros are added.
Austrian newspaper “Heute” reported no age limit; even underage children are counted. Also, regarding the maximum amount, there is no upward limit.
In other words, the more heads in the household, the more money you get from the government. Large families, therefore, benefit most from the new bonus.
The new electricity cost supplement subsidy is to be deducted, for the most part, automatically from the next annual bill.
The authorities know around 700,000 addresses to receive the new cash bonus. More than half of them could be registered automatically and would therefore receive the supplementary allowance without additional effort.
An application model will be created in mid-April for those addresses that cannot be registered automatically or where there is more than one metering point with withdrawal. The government promises that those who need to apply will be specially informed about what they must use it.
Electricity cost supplement subsidy is the official name of this new governmental allowance to relieve hundreds of euros. The new cash bonus extends the electricity cost brake, which took effect in December 2022, to multi-person households and large families.
The original electricity cost break applies to the first 2,900 kilowatt hours consumed. Here the state adds 30 cents per kilowatt hour to the energy price. Not only did it pay for second homes, but the electricity cost did not consider how many people lived in a household.
The hammer prices also slew anyone who needed more than 2,900 kilowatt hours at current electricity rates. The new subsidy is now intended to remedy precisely this state of affairs.
Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) commented: “The high energy costs brought about by the Russian war of aggression are a burden on the people in our country. As the federal government, we have already launched a large number of relief measures. In this way, we are supporting families, households and businesses in this challenging phase.”
