Over 80,000 tons of edible food are thrown away yearly in Upper Austria alone. Food waste aside, this also has an impact on traffic.

According to a study by the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, around 130 kilograms of edible food ends up in the trash per household and year. Extrapolated to Upper Austria, this adds up to more than 80,000 tons. However, before this food is in the garbage, it is first transported in trucks, sometimes hundreds of kilometres. If this discarded, edible food were loaded into average trucks, then the trips to the stores and stores alone would result in a column of trucks stretching from Wels to Vienna, according to a calculation by the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ).

800 euros worth of food ends up in the trash
But then there are the waste transports. With an average load of eight tons per garbage truck, around 10,000 garbage transports are necessary just for the food thrown away by households. The VCÖ concludes that not throwing away food saves CO2 and much money. According to a study by the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, this food costs 800 euros per household per year.
