Some foods go bad much faster in the fridge! We’ll tell you how to make sure they stay fresh longer instead.
The refrigerator was a revolutionary invention that made life easier for everyone. However, even though we all grew up with it, we still make crucial mistakes when using the refrigerator.
After shopping, many people put all their food directly into the fridge – they want it to last as long as possible. That’s good in principle – but some foods stay anything but fresh when refrigerated.
- tomatoes
It’s better not to store tomatoes in the refrigerator. Many hope to slow down the ripening of tomatoes, which easily become mushy, in the fridge – unfortunately, unsuccessfully. Because there their growth is not slowed down but stopped, and the sweet taste is lost! So if you don’t like tasteless tomatoes, it’s better to keep them out of the cold – and eat them faster.
- basil
Basil also quickly loses its bright green colour and crunchy texture – but should still not end up in the refrigerator because: Basil is not very resistant to cold. It is best to place the stems in water like a bouquet. If there’s any leftover after cooking, you should blanch and freeze the remaining leaves.
- potatoes
With potatoes, too, you often race against time: if you don’t look at them for a minute, they start to sprout immediately (and then it’s best not to eat them!). But: Potatoes go bad faster in the refrigerator. It is better to store them in a place protected from light – such as the cellar or a storage cupboard.
- oil
Oils such as sunflower and olive oil also do not tolerate the climate in the refrigerator. It is better to store them protected from light in the kitchen cabinet! By the way, oil has a much shorter shelf life than many think: If the oil has not yet been opened, it will keep for about 12 months; if it has been opened, however, it will only keep for about one to two months. Bad oil can be recognized by its rotten smell (good oil smells neutral) and, at the latest, by its yucky taste.
- onions
Onions, like potatoes, should be stored in a dark, cool place outside the refrigerator – but not in a bag or a bag because they do not like the confinement. However, onions should never be stored right next to potatoes. The gases that potatoes secrete cause them to rot faster!
- bread
Bread also does not belong in the refrigerator because it dries out much faster there. It is better to freeze what you will not eat for the next few days. If the bread has become stale and dry, you can still use it: For example, in “poor knights” as croutons or breadcrumbs for breading.
