U.S. President Donald Trump expects an effective coronavirus vaccine within the next three to four weeks. “We are close to a vaccine,” he told ABC News. “If you want to know the truth, the previous government might have taken years to get their hands on a vaccine because of the FDA and all the approvals,” Trump said.

“And we could have it within weeks, three weeks, four weeks, now,” the president continued. Last week, Pfizer and BionTech reaffirmed their commitment to file for regulatory approval in October if the results of their Phase 3 trial of a joint vaccine candidate are successful.

The Vaccine Commission (Stiko) at the Robert Koch Institute expects that there will be several different vaccines against coronavirus in Germany. This is in view of the large number of probable vaccine candidates, said the Stiko vice-chairwoman Sabine Wicker

It could be that individual vaccines are particularly suitable for certain population groups such as older generation. The vaccination commission has the task to determine priorities for the expected case that a vaccine is available first only in limited quantity. To do this, it is necessary to examine which population groups are at the highest risk of infection and “who would benefit most from a vaccination,” said Wicker. Such a benefit-risk analysis is a central element of Stiko’s standardized approach.
