The cargo ship SS Cotopaxi was built in 1918 and launched shortly after. In 1925, it disappeared without a trace in the infamous Bermuda Triangle. After more than 90 years, the ship suddenly reappears on the surface.

More than 90 years later
In 2015, a ship was said to have reappeared after sinking a few days after leaving Charleston Harbour in South Carolina (USA) with 32 people on board. It was on its way to Havana, Cuba, fully loaded with coal.
In 2015, information suddenly surfaced that the ship had been sighted again, 90 years after its disappearance. No one can explain the mysterious appearance of the vessel.
Inspiration for a movie
The case of the SS Cotopaxi became so interesting because Steven Spielberg made the disappearance the subject of one of his movies, The 1977 masterpiece Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
In 2015, when the ship was reported to have suddenly drifted into a restricted military area, it was investigated, and a captain’s log would have confirmed the ship’s identity as the SS Cotopaxi.
The Bermuda Triangle
This is not the first Bermuda Triangle mystery. For example, Flight 19, with five fighter planes, disappeared there in 1945. The aircraft that was sent to look for them suffered the same fate. Such events have created a mystery in this particular area.
The SS Cotopaxi’s mystery remains unsubstantiated despite widespread doubts and official sources. On the other hand, the American media accepted the SS Cotopaxi’s existence and disappearance in 1925.
All a hoax?
But the mysterious appearance of the cargo ship is said to be fictional. According to the Associated Press, in 2017, the Cuban authorities denied the fleet’s appearance. As the French newspaper Le Monde reported, this would not be the only misinformation circulating on the Internet.
The story had appeared on a website called Klixony, claiming that the Cuban coast had discovered this ship. Two years later, however, they denied it.
