As the summer heat subsides and the leaves begin to fall, it’s only a matter of time before we reach for our scarves and hats. However, scientists recommend taking as much vitamin D as possible before the dark and cold months begin.
The first thing you can do to meet your vitamin D needs is to use a sun lamp, but that doesn’t mean you should make an appointment for a tanning bed. The ultraviolet radiation from tanning equipment can cause cancer, but getting a unique lamp shouldn’t be a problem.
Second, you should eat vitamin D-rich foods such as fatty fish, herring, mackerel, and wild salmon. Another strategy is to take vitamin D supplements, with the recommended amount depending on your blood level. Finally, even if it’s not typical ice cream weather, spending time outdoors during the early fall can help boost your vitamin D levels.
