The Carnival of Rio de Janeiro will be cancelled next February due to the coronavirus pandemic. The spectacle will be postponed indefinitely, the organizers announced yesterday (local time). At the Carnival of Rio every year millions of people celebrate in the streets and on the beaches.
“We have come to the conclusion that the event must be postponed,” said Jorge Castanheira, head of the Samba Schools Association LIESA. The association organizes the elaborate and spectacular carnival parades. The samba schools do not have enough time and sufficient financial and organizational resources to prepare the carnival parades until February, Castanheira explained.
Brazil is one of the countries worst hit by the pandemic in the world, and Rio de Janeiro is one of the worst affected cities there. To date, the pandemic has killed around 139,000 people in Brazil, the second highest number in the world after the USA.
