Always drinking just water or unsweetened tea can quickly become boring. That’s why many people turn to soft drinks, smoothies or energy drinks. We are easily seduced by the tempting flavours and glittering packaging. This is okay from time to time, but it should be the exception rather than the rule. Because although lemonades, iced teas and the like taste great, they can lead to health problems in the long term.

The unhealthiest drinks
So, which drinks are particularly unhealthy and bad for your health? A list recently compiled by ‘heidelberg24.de’ based on nutrient content, studies and various nutritional guides reveals the five most unhealthy drinks that should be avoided or consumed only in moderation.

  1. Lemonades
    Sweet lemonades may be tempting, especially in summer, but they are real sugar bombs. Lemonades contain up to 60 grams of sugar per 0.5 liter—the equivalent of about 20 sugar cubes. Regular consumption, therefore, favours the development of obesity and diabetes and damages teeth.
  2. Energy drinks
    Instead of coffee, many people turn to energy drinks for a quick energy boost. However, these drinks are not only loaded with caffeine, but also with huge amounts of sugar. Excessive consumption can lead to heart palpitations and sleep disorders, and it can even increase the risk of serious illness in the long term.
  3. Smoothies
    Pureed fruit and vegetables sound healthy, but they’re not. Although smoothies can be enriched with vitamins and nutrients, they often contain a considerable amount of sugar—up to 75 grams of sugar per 0.5 litre. In order to really preserve the valuable ingredients, it is, therefore, better not to buy smoothies but to prepare them yourself.
  4. Beer
    Alcoholic drinks, such as beer, are very refreshing, especially on hot days. However, excessive consumption can also have serious consequences for your health. As well as promoting obesity and liver disease, beer also increases the risk of cancer and other serious illnesses.
  5. Industrialized iced tea
    Although iced tea is a popular refreshing drink, it is often loaded with sugar and other unhealthy additives. Excessive consumption can lead to obesity, among other things. However, you can easily make your unsweetened iced tea.
