Both new infections and corona intensive care patients continue to increase.

In just 24 hours, coronavirus cases increased by 873 – almost 900 – yesterday. This is the number of new positive cases that were recently reported during the “first wave” and the lockdown. Unfortunately, there can be no talk of a stabilization or even a drop in new infections.

On Monday – on the weekend there is less testing and less registrations – there were 556 new infections. On Tuesday – the day the traffic light commission takes as the cut-off date for its weekly evaluation – the number of cases was 609.

From Wednesday onwards, the number of corona positives rose to 772 and now to just under 900.

In the meantime, almost 500 Covid patients have to be treated in hospitals. In Vienna, there are more Covid hospitalizations than ever before – also more than at the peak in March. In the intensive care unit – the number is also increasing here – almost 100 patients already have to be treated. And unfortunately three more people died yesterday of Covid.

In whole Europe the numbers are rising at present certainly. In comparison to two neighboring countries – Italy and Germany – the number of cases in Austria is increasing significantly more.

“Infection rates far too high”
“The infection rates are far too high for this time. Because the risk of infection will continue to rise as temperatures drop. I therefore continue to appeal to regions with an increased risk to pay particular attention to rapid testing and rapid contact person management. I also appeal to the local authorities to make use of the new Covid-19 measures law and the possibility for regional additional measures and to set priorities precisely in areas of spread,” said Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) in a press release.

Increasing clusters and less clarification

But how does the high number of cases come about? On the one hand, clusters – family celebrations, parties, businesses, schoolchildren – are increasingly being found, while on the other hand the clearance rate is falling in parts of the country. The government hopes that the measures adopted last week will now begin to take effect. After all, with university openings and colder temperatures, new challenges are coming our way.
