Anyone who regularly commutes to work by car can apply for a travel allowance of up to 1,200 euros.

You can’t drive away from inflation. In addition to the increase in CO₂ taxes and the resulting rise in fuel prices, vehicle tax and the standard consumption tax, or NoVA for short, were also increased this year. This greatly impacts the wallets of those who rely on their car for their daily commute.

Depending on the federal state, attempts are made to help commuters with subsidies and travel allowances. The newspaper “Heute” published an overview of the significant points to consider.

Commuters from Burgenland can apply for a travel allowance from a distance of 20 kilometres and an income of fewer than 3,697 euros gross per month (+ 10% for each child for whom the family allowance is received). But hurry is advised: An application can be submitted online retrospectively for one calendar year and only until June 30.

The annual subsidy amounts to 137 euros for a distance of at least 20 km to the place of work, 343 euros for 50 km and 513 euros for 100 km + 3 euros per additional kilometre driven. The maximum annual subsidy is 850 euros.

Anyone who commutes to work predominantly by public transport (more than 50% of the distance by car) can secure an eco-bonus of 20% of the travel allowance.

The Lower Austrian commuter allowance calculation is based on the shortest distance between the place of residence (nearest main or secondary residence) and the place of work. The distance must be at least 25 kilometres. The distance is calculated using a version of the route planner, anachb.at adapted for the Labor Market Department.
Furthermore, the total monthly gross family income must not exceed the maximum limit. This is, for example, EUR 2,000 for a one-person household and EUR 4,400 for a married couple with one child.

Employees who commute to work by public transport and have a personal annual pass receive an eco-bonus amounting to 20 percent of the calculated amount of the Lower Austrian commuter allowance.

The maximum possible amount of Lower Austrian commuter assistance is 1,000 euros per year or 1,200 euros if the eco-bonus is awarded. Applications can be submitted online until the end of October.

Upper Austria also has a commuter allowance for a distance to work of at least 25 kilometres. This is €218 per year for distances of 25 kilometres or more, €306 per year for distances of 50 kilometres or more and €421 per year for distances of 75 kilometres or more. An application can be made online on the website of the province of Upper Austria until the end of the year.

Prerequisites: The main residence must be registered in Upper Austria, and an annual income limit of 28,000 euros must not be exceeded (increases by 2,800 euros per child in the household).

In Styria, the commuter allowance will again be paid retroactively for 2023 this year. It amounts to up to 389 euros and can be applied directly online until the end of October.

The following applies: The main residence must be in Styria, and the route to work must be at least 25 km in one direction. Annual income must not exceed 35,000 euros (excluding family allowance but including 13th and 14th salaries).

Up to 825 euros are available for commuters in Carinthia who can prove a one-way distance of at least five kilometres between their workplace and residence. To apply for and receive the total allowance – closing date: October 31 – you must commute at least four days a week.

If public transport is reasonable, up to 100 percent of the ticket costs can be subsidized, depending on the income limit and distance.
