Italy is facing a heatwave. According to meteorologists, it will be particularly hot in parts of the Mediterranean on Wednesday,, with temperatures up to almost 40 degrees. On the large islands of Sicily and Sardinia and in the Apulia region in the south, some areas could even break the 40-degree mark on Thursday, according to the official weather service of the Italian Air Force. The weather portal ilmeteo.it is also expecting high temperatures.
It can also get very hot in Rome’s capital: Up to 38 degrees are expected there on Thursday. In Campania, with the city of Naples, temperatures of up to 40 degrees are expected in some places. According to meteorologists, people in Tuscany, with the popular tourist cities of Florence, Pisa and Siena, can also expect 32 to 36 degrees. It will also be very warm in Emilia-Romagna on the Adriatic coast. On the other hand, the more northerly regions of Italy will be spared excessively high temperatures.
According to the weather portal ilmeteo.it, the high temperatures in central and southern Italy are due to an African high-pressure area called “Minos”, which is moving towards Italy. The hot air is also accompanied by high humidity. There will also be so-called tropical nights. The air temperature will not fall below 20 degrees at night. However, the wave will weaken towards the weekend. Weather experts expect heavy thunderstorms and a temperature drop, especially in the north.
