Changes to driving licenses and vehicle registrations.
Numerous changes for drivers will come into force in Austria on July 1, 2024. One of the most significant changes concerns stricter controls and alcohol tests at the wheel.
As vol.at reports, the police will carry out more alcohol tests to increase road safety.
Drivers who are caught with a blood alcohol content of 0.5 per mille or more will face severe penalties and a driving license revocation. This measure aims to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents further.
Important changes also occur in the areas of environmental and climate protection. Starting July 1, 2024, new cars must meet stricter emission standards.
This measure is intended to improve air quality and reduce CO2 emissions. There is also good news for electric vehicle drivers: the subsidy for purchasing e-cars will be extended, and more charging stations will be installed nationwide.
Another change concerns the use of electric scooters. In the future, they will only be allowed to travel on designated cycle paths and roads with a maximum speed of 25 km/h.
In addition, all-electric scooters must be equipped with lighting to increase road safety.
There are also changes to driving licenses. From July 2024 on, it will be easier to apply for and renew driving licenses digitally.
This is intended to reduce bureaucracy and simplify the process for citizens. Digitalization will also be used to speed up and simplify vehicle registration.
