Heat can have serious effects on health. Vulnerable and heat-sensitive population groups, therefore, need special protection. The most important thing is to prepare for heatwaves and take preventative measures. Thus, the Vienna Regional Health Directorate has introduced a preventive heatwave warning service for the Viennese population. In cooperation with GeoSphere Austria, the warning service warns of impending heatwaves that could harm health.
Unprotected exposure to the sun can lead to increased sweating and dehydration. Physical overheating and heat buildup can lead to heat stroke, collapse, confusion, and, in the worst case, death. If people in Vienna experience heat symptoms, they can contact the 1450 health advice center.
Cool places in the city protect everyone from the heat
With the 12 Cool Zones, Vienna has created cool places to retreat and relax. The rooms have a pleasant temperature of between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius. They are accessible to everyone free of charge.
Mist showers also provide cooling by spraying fine water droplets, lowering the ambient temperature in public spaces. They are activated when the temperature reaches a maximum of around 30 degrees Celsius over a longer period of time or when it no longer falls below 20 degrees Celsius at night. Over 300 fog showers in various designs are available to the Viennese to cool off.
