Most airplanes we see at the airport or in the sky are white. But why is that?
Airplanes could be painted in any color. Every airline is free to decide on the colors of its aircraft: It can do whatever it wants in terms of design. But why are the vast majority of airplanes painted white?
White is cheap
There are indeed reasons for the prevalence of white mortality. Firstly, it is once again about money. White paint is used very frequently, so it is also produced in huge quantities.
And the most important principle of mass production is? That’s right: the more, the cheaper. White paint is simply cheaper than paint in other colors.
White is interchangeable
Another advantage is that airlines lend and sell their aircraft to each other. The white color makes it easier to change fleets: if all aircraft are the same color, there is no need for constant repainting. All you have to do is change the logo.
White keeps you cool
Finally, there is another technical reason for the white color. At flight altitude, the outside temperature is very low, but the sun illuminates an airplane all the more intensely. This causes the temperature inside the aircraft to rise. However, because white reflects more sunlight than dark colors, it is easier to keep the temperature inside the plane stable.
A black aircraft would actually have to use more energy to cool the air inside. It would, therefore, consume more kerosene. When a plane consumes more kerosene, the airline’s costs increase.
