By now, we all know that scrolling on TikTok and Instagram for hours on end is not the best thing for us, even though we feel like it relaxes us. However, a relatively unusual piece of information recently emerged in the form of a new study: regular cell phone use is said to be linked to heart disease. The fact that smartphones can also affect our physical health is news to many. But why is that?

Cell phone use can lead to cardiovascular disease
Researchers have found that frequent smartphone use can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes. The study, published in the “Canadian Journal of Cardiology”, analyzed data from over 440,000 participants and came to the following conclusion:

People who used their cell phones for an hour or more per week had a 10 percent higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease compared to people who held their cell phones less frequently. Before we collectively panic at the phrase “one hour per week”, let’s take a look at the reasons for this result.

Why is frequent cell phone use harmful?
The study does not prove that smartphones directly lead to heart problems. Rather, it says something about the connection between cell phone use and our lifestyle. For example, excessive cell phone use could disrupt our sleep rhythm, the researchers suggest as an explanation in the study. Constantly holding a cell phone in our hands could also contribute to psychological stress and negative emotions, as well as anxiety and depression. These factors also represent a higher risk of heart disease.

So it is not the cell phone per se that is harmful to our health, but the way it affects our lifestyle and well-being. Moreover, more conclusive evidence and more measurements are needed before these links are a real cause for concern, says a co-author of the study.
