Vienna, Austria – September 15, 2024 – A group of talented contemporary Filipino artists will present two significant exhibitions in Vienna this September, offering the city a glimpse into the vibrant and evolving Philippine art scene. The first show will take place at the prestigious City Gallery Vienna by public artists from September 16-21, 2024; the second exhibition follows at The Gallery Steiner, a renowned contemporary art gallery, from September 23 to October 19, 2024. The openings are on September 17 and 26, respectively.
The group shows collaborate with the Vienna-based Filipino arts network Sige! and the Manila-based collective Bastedor. The shows feature notable artists including Arnel David Garcia, Art Lozano, Binong Alvin Javier, Cezar Arro, Charmaine Taus, Didier Alarcon, Gerry De Guzman, Harold Khan, Jojo Ramirez, Maan Umotoy-Premacio, Norlie Meimban, Ejem Alarcon, and Ela Andal, is set to awe audiences with diverse artistic styles and expressions. The two exhibitions will bring together paintings that reflect the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage and contemporary perspectives.
The first exhibition at CityGalleryVienna by public artist ISANG GUHIT will focus on the dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity, offering a fresh narrative on Filipino identity and global art. This will be followed by a more intimate exhibition at The Gallery Steiner, ISANG HAGOD, which will highlight personal explorations of themes including migration, (queer) identity, and the diaspora experience. These topics resonate deeply with the artists’ journeys and the Filipino community.
Arnel David Garcia’s and Art Lozano’s fusion of abstract and sculpting techniques offer reflections on the complexities of human emotion. Norlie Meimban and Harold Khan explore the dynamism of movement and modern life through their distinctive visual narratives. Ela Andal and Maan Umotoy-Premacio express themes of femininity and cultural identity. Cezar Arro and Binong Alvin Javier delve into surrealism and symbolism, taking viewers on a journey of observation and discovery. Ejem and Didier Alarcon are brothers known for their intricate and meticulous paintings that create narratives of personal and cultural significance. At the same time, Charmaine Taus is a painter whose vibrant abstractions reflect a deep connection that delves into individual and collective memories. Gerry De Guzman is a multidisciplinary artist who blends traditional Filipino art forms with contemporary methods.
Curators from both galleries have expressed excitement about the shows, emphasizing the significance of these artists’ work in bridging cultural gaps and fostering greater understanding between the East and West.
“These artists embody the best of Filipino contemporary art,” Thomas Leimer, the curator/owner of City Gallery Vienna by public artists, said. Their works are not just aesthetically powerful but also offer insight into what Filipino art is capable of.”
Both exhibitions are expected to draw art collectors, critics, and enthusiasts from across Europe eager to engage with the latest trends in contemporary art from Southeast Asia.
The opening reception at City Gallery Vienna, by public artists, will be held on September 17, while the opening at Gallery Steiner will be on September 26. Both events start at 7 p.m.
