Thousands of residents of a poor neighbourhood in Manila are homeless after a major fire. At least 2,000 families, or around 10,000 people, lost their roofs over their heads in the flames, according to the fire department in the Philippine capital.
According to the authorities, the fire broke out in the residential area of Isla Puting Bato in the district of Tondo. This poor neighbourhood borders a container terminal in the port area of Manila.
There were initially no reports of fatalities, but according to the authorities, several firefighters were injured during the operation.
According to the fire department, the fire of unknown origin spread rapidly through the area. The residential buildings there are mainly made of light and easily combustible material; the streets between them are narrow, and the wall facing the harbour area is very high, explained incident commander Alejandro Ramos.
Those affected need a new home
The fire department had to use ladders and break through some walls to access the fire zone. The Coast Guard and the Philippine Air Force supported the firefighting efforts. The fire was only considered extinguished after eight hours.
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna promised to support the now homeless residents of the neighbourhood. “We will ensure that the evacuees receive assistance in the form of cash, food, and materials to rebuild their homes,” she said in a message published on Facebook. The relocation of those affected should also be considered. “Isla Puting Bato is no longer a safe place for them.”
