In a press release, the Austrian Retail Association (HV) announced that additional carnival revenues are expected to rise to 35 million euros this year.
According to the HV Consumer Check, four out of ten Austrians stated that they wanted to attend a carnival this year. In 2025, the per capita spending of those who celebrate will increase by 15 percent to 69 euros.
Fasching: this is what the money is mainly spent on
The money is mainly spent on costumes, food, snacks, drinks and make-up. Attending parties is particularly popular in the west, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Salzburg: in Upper Austria, one in two people plan to attend a party, in Vienna only one in three. Burgenland and Lower Austria lead the way in predicted spending by party-goers, 79 euros per person. Vienna is in second place with 75 euros, followed by Styria and Carinthia with 67 euros, Upper Austria and Salzburg with 64 euros and Tyrol and Vorarlberg with 60 euros.
Social events such as the carnival and ball seasons mean profit for the retail trade, gastronomy, and tourism. “Carnival and ball season are important traditional, social and cultural events and economic factors. While an average of 245 euros per person is spent on balls in the retail sector, 69 euros is spent on carnival,” explains Rainer Will, spokesperson for the Austrian retail sector. According to the HV Consumer Check, every third person in Austria will go to at least one ball in 2025.
