Pope Francis, who celebrated the twelfth anniversary of his election as head of the Church at the Gemelli Clinic in Rome on Thursday, spent another quiet night. The Vatican announced this on Friday morning. The Pope has now been in hospital for four weeks. He was admitted to the University Hospital in Rome on 14 February. Slight signs of improvement give cause for optimism.

A bulletin from the doctors is expected on Friday evening. They now only publish their bulletin every other day, but the Vatican provides daily information about the Argentinean’s daily routine. The 88-year-old suffers from complicated bilateral pneumonia.

Pope continues to receive oxygen during the day
According to the Vatican, the Pope continues to receive oxygen during the day and is ventilated continuously at night. The doctors want to wait and see whether the upward trend continues over the next few days. Francis’ condition has stabilized since his last respiratory crisis twelve days ago.

The Pope is expected to follow the Lenten retreats of the Roman Curia in the Paul VI Hall via video link on Friday, as he has done since the beginning of this week. The meditations will be led by the Italian Capuchin Father Roberto Pasolini, the preacher of the Pontifical Household. The title of the retreat is “The Hope of Eternal Life”. The Vatican Curia congratulated the Pope on Thursday on his pontificate anniversary.
