Exactly five years ago today, on 16 March 2020, the first nationwide corona lockdown was enacted in Austria to curb the spread of the disease. Austria went into a state of emergency that was to last for several months. Nobody knew the effects at the time.
Measures in Austria
The first corona death was reported on 12 March 2020, and four days later the first lockdown was imposed in Austria. Further measures were followed, such as restricting hospital visits and requiring people to wear face masks in supermarkets.
Further lockdowns
The measures were gradually eased as early as mid-April, but a new lockdown was imposed towards the end of the same year after new highs in infections were reached.
Still present
The number of infections rises and falls repeatedly, and new concepts such as the 3G rule are introduced. The pandemic still reverberates in society today, even though coronavirus was no longer a notifiable disease from 1 July 2023. From April 2024, antigen tests were subject to a charge, while vaccinations remained free. In June 2024, a new strain of coronavirus emerged, which led to a renewed increase in cases in Austria.
