Blood rain in Austria: Starting on Saturday, Saharan dust will cause reddish rainfall. Health caution is advised, especially for respiratory diseases.
“Blood rain” sounds like the title of a new Stephen King horror novel or an old Viking ritual, but in reality, it is a fascinating natural phenomenon in which rainwater takes on a reddish hue.

This happens when fine dust from the Sahara is transported into the atmosphere by wind currents and mixes with rainfall. The dust contains iron oxide, which gives the rain its characteristic red color.
At the latest, the gigantic Saharan dust cloud will cover Austria by midday on Friday (28 March). Repeated heavy dust pollution may occur until Saturday evening (29 March). Caution: Saharan dust can have health effects, especially for people with respiratory or cardiovascular problems.
According to the warning, physical exertion outdoors in high concentrations of Saharan dust should be avoided, and protective measures such as breathing masks should be worn if necessary. If necessary, one should even stay at home.
With a low center over the Adriatic Sea, it will remain overcast and rainy all day in the Eastern Alps on Saturday. By the evening, the focus of the precipitation will shift from the southeast to the northern side of the Alps. The best conditions for the development of “blood rain.”

Even if the name sounds scary, the “blood rain” phenomenon is not dangerous. However, it can leave visible deposits on surfaces, especially on cars or buildings. This is an impressive example of how global weather and climate patterns are interconnected.
