How many calories does a caffè latte have?

Many people think that coffee has hardly any calories. However, this is only true if you drink it black and without sugar. It makes a big difference whether you drink it with milk. Nutritionist Margret Morlo explains, “If I add about 150 milliliters of whole milk to my coffee, it’s almost 100 calories.” That’s already a snack, says the expert
If you sweeten your latte with around ten grams of sugar, you consume 40 calories. Most people think of a caffè latte as a low-calorie drink without realizing that it contains sugar and fat. An iced coffee has even more calories: in addition to coffee, it usually contains vanilla ice cream, chocolate sprinkles, and whipped cream.

The calorie content of latte macchiatos and the like is just as high. If you snack on a cookie or muffin on top, this mixture can make itself felt on your hips.

Salad instead of caffè latte
“Milk is a nutritious food,” emphasizes Morlo. She recommends eating only a salad at lunchtime, for example, to balance out the caffè latte. If you often drink coffee with lots of milk, sugar, and perhaps caramel syrup, you must cut back elsewhere in your diet. “If you do this too often and don’t consume the calories, you will inevitably put on weight,” warns Morlo.
“That’s a lot of calories,” says Morlo. The combination of a latte and a sweet adds up to around 500 calories. That’s a quarter of the daily requirement, which is 2,000 calories on average for adults.

Low-fat milk instead of whole milk
To prevent this, customers in the coffee shop could ask for low-fat milk to be used in the preparation. “But that only saves a few calories,” said the nutrition expert.

Not fooling yourself is essential: “Make a conscious decision – and then enjoy your cafe latte without getting angry afterwards.”
