Only a few clouds are moving across western Austria. In Vorarlberg and Tyrol in particular, there is an increased risk of short but heavy showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. These conditions may be accompanied by heavy rain, hail, and strong gusts of wind. Thunderstorms may also occur from Pinzgau (Salzburg) to the Salzkammergut (Upper Austria).

The current severe weather warning map from the Severe Weather Center.

The Austrian Severe Weather Center has therefore issued advance warnings – currently affecting Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Salzburg, Carinthia, Upper Austria, and Styria. The warnings refer to possible thunderstorms and hail.

These warnings are currently in effect.

In most of Austria, especially in the Innviertel (Upper Austria) and central Carinthia, it will remain sunny and almost cloudless throughout the day.

Temperatures rise – brisk winds from the east to the south

A partly strong wind from the east to south will also cause foehn-like conditions. The daily highs will be between 28 and 36 degrees Celsius. Even at 2,000 meters above sea level, temperatures will reach 18 to 22 degrees Celsius, which is extremely warm for this altitude.

Thursday: The hottest day of the week is coming

On Thursday, the heat wave will reach its peak in most of Austria. Peak temperatures of up to 38 degrees are expected in the east. Elsewhere, temperatures will rise to between 30 and 38 degrees. Only in the west will it remain slightly cooler, with temperatures of 25 to 30 degrees in Vorarlberg, North Tyrol, and northern Salzburg.

The first showers and thunderstorms may occur there as early as the morning. In most regions, it will remain sunny at first. In the afternoon, however, the risk of thunderstorms will increase significantly, especially along the northern side of the Alps from Lake Constance (Vorarlberg) to the Vienna Woods (Lower Austria). Severe thunderstorms are also possible. In addition, strong to very strong winds from the west to northwest will pick up in the Danube region, which may cause a noticeable cooling in the evening.
