In Germany the goal is clear: families and friends should be able to meet again at Christmas without too much fear. But for this to happen, the federal and state governments believe that everyone must first make significant restrictions. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) agreed on Wednesday to a “partial lockdown” with the state premiers. The new rules are very close to the shutdown of spring. They are to come into force on November 2 – and for the time being will remain in force until the end of the month. Two weeks after the new measures come into force, there will be renewed consultations with the states to determine whether the decisions are effective or whether they need to be modified.

Contact restrictions
In public, only members of two households may meet – a maximum of ten people. Also from private journeys at home and abroad is to be refrained.

Catering trade
Restaurants, bars, clubs, discos and pubs will be closed. Delivery and collection of food for consumption at home is also allowed. Canteens are also allowed to open.

Free time
Leisure facilities will be closed. These include theaters, operas, concert halls, trade fairs, cinemas, amusement parks and amusement arcades.

Sports
Fitness studios, swimming pools and fun pools will be closed. Amateur sports operations will be discontinued, so clubs will no longer be allowed to train. Individual sports, such as going jogging alone, will continue to be allowed. Professional sports such as the German Soccer League are only allowed without spectators.

Services
Cosmetic studios, massage practices and tattoo studios will be closed because the minimum distance cannot be maintained here. Medically necessary treatments, for example with a physiotherapist, are still possible. Hairdressers also remain open.

Supermarkets
Retail remains open – but there are regulations on how many customers can be in the store at any one time. It must be ensured that there is no more than one customer per 10 square meters of sales space in the stores.

Schools and kindergartens
Schools and kindergartens remain open. The Länder decide on the necessary protective measures.
