The European Union can purchase up to 300 million doses of the promising corona vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer. The EU Commission formally approved the framework agreement with the two companies on Wednesday, as EU circles confirmed. The EU states will thus be entitled to purchase the vaccine as soon as it is approved. It is not yet clear when this will happen.
The EU agreement provides for the purchase of 200 million vaccine doses from Biontech/Pfizer and the option of a further 100 million doses. Under an EU agreement, future vaccines will be distributed according to population size. Austria can therefore expect to receive around two percent of the quantity under this framework agreement.
The EU Commission has also concluded similar framework agreements with three other vaccine manufacturers – Johnson & Johnson, Astrazeneca and Sanofi-GSK. They too have promising vaccine candidates on the starting blocks. Biontech and Pfizer were the first Western manufacturers to present promising data from their clinical trials on Monday. However, none of the manufacturers has yet received approval for the European market. This must be applied for at the EMA as soon as sufficient data from clinical tests are available.
