From spring 2021 it will be possible to carry your driving license stored on your cell phone. Corresponding changes in the law were initiated on Wednesday in the Council of Ministers. The next step is the digitalization of the registration certificate.

The idea of extending the drivers license to other areas, such as the registration certificate, is being considered. The background to this is that Austrians have to carry a large number of ID cards with them in order to present them at checks if necessary.

In order to implement the project, amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act, the Driving Licence Act, the Passport Act and the E-Government Act will be necessary. The digital driving license will probably be valid at the beginning of the second quarter. For the application, a citizen card or cell phone signature is required to verify identity. So far, the ministry has not yet provided an explanation of how the digital driver’s license will be implemented in practice.
Digital administrative procedures
According to the Ministry, Austria is in a leading position in terms of awareness of online administration services in a country comparison. According to this, 72 percent of Austrians used the offer in 2020, 60 percent in Switzerland and 54 percent in Germany. In Austria, the “Digitales Amt” app was introduced around 2019 to enable mobile handling of administrative tasks. Driving licenses will also be uploaded there in the future.

“Next year, drivers will be able to identify themselves with their own smartphones at traffic checks – very conveniently via the app. Austria is a pioneer in this area and one of the first countries to implement the digital driver’s license. This is another step towards the administration of the future,” said Minister Schramböck.
