It was the world’s largest sporting event since the outbreak of the Corona crisis. There were only a few masks to be seen.
In Australia, almost 50,000 people attended a rugby game in the port city of Brisbane. On Wednesday (local time) 49,155 fans watched the decisive game of the final series “State of Origin” at Suncorp Stadium as Queensland won 20:14 against New South Wales. The stadium was thus almost sold out, only a few people wearing masks could be seen on pictures. According to the organizers, it was the world’s largest sporting event since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic.
In the Australian state of Queensland, the corona situation is currently relaxed. On the day of the match, the state reported only one new case. However, if local outbreaks occur, strict lockdowns are imposed in Australia. While in Queensland, for example, stadiums were allowed to be used to one hundred percent capacity shortly before the game, citizens in the neighboring state of South Australia have not even been allowed to go out for sports since Thursday.
