Before the EU summit today, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) expressed his hope that vaccinations against coronavirus will soon be available in Europe. “The earlier we can start vaccinating in the EU, the better. Because every day of a pandemic in Europe currently means thousands of deaths, severe economic damage and countless people fearing for their jobs,” Kurz explained in a statement.
Another topic of the two-day EU summit in Brussels will be an exchange on the current CoV situation. Kurz thanked EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for the “very successful European procurement process” for CoV vaccines.
Congratulations to Great Britain
The Chancellor also congratulated Great Britain on the start of the vaccinations. “I hope that the European Medicines Agency will also approve the first vaccines in the EU quickly and unbureaucratically, in compliance with all scientific standards,” said Kurz.
So far, two applications for approval of CoV vaccines have been received by the European Medicines Agency EMA. The U.S. company Moderna and the German company Biontech together with their U.S. partner Pfizer have submitted applications and final data sets with the aim of the EMA completing the approval procedure for their vaccine candidates.
