2,461 new infections with the coronavirus have been reported in Austria in the past 24 hours. This was below the average of the past seven days (2,719). The situation in hospitals also eased on Sunday. 3,444 Covid 19 patients had to be treated as inpatients, 155 fewer than the previous day. 577 sick people received intensive medical care, by 14 less than on Saturday.
The number of Covid 19 infections requiring hospital treatment decreased by 9.4 percent last week. In absolute numbers, there were 358 affected people who could be discharged home. In the intensive care units, doctors and nurses were also able to breathe a little easier. Within seven days, 55 fewer patients had to be treated, a decrease of 8.7 percent.
That the “hard” lockdown did not fail to have the desired effect is also shown by the so-called active cases, the number of those tested positive minus those who recovered and died. This figure was 36,884 on Sunday, 640 fewer than the previous day. In total, 322,463 positive test results have been reported in Austria since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic. 281,106 affected persons have recovered, 4,467 persons have died so far, 58 of them in the past 24 hours.
As far as recent new infections are concerned, in absolute numbers the most were registered in Upper Austria with 658. They were followed by Vienna (492), Lower Austria (403), Styria (302) and Carinthia (226). There were 181 new cases in Salzburg, 158 in Tyrol, 164 in Vorarlberg and 57 in Burgenland.
21,202 tests for coronavirus have been performed in the past 24 hours, a remarkable result for the weekend. In terms of Austria as a whole, SARS-CoV-2 was detected in 12.5 percent of those tested. In Carinthia, however, this value was 43.0 percent, and in Upper Austria it was 38.4 percent. The seven-day incidence – the number of newly infected persons per 100,000 population – is currently 213.8 across Austria, compared with 215.0 the previous day.
