The number of coronavirus deaths in Russia is more than twice as high as previously announced, according to government figures. More than 115,000 people have died with the virus in the country since the pandemic began, Vice Gov. Tatyana Golikova told state television today. More than 70,900 of those deaths were due solely to Covid-19, she said, while another 45,100 had tested positive for the virus.
The official government website on Wednesday continued to talk about “only” 56,400 coronavirus deaths. The site only lists cases where coronavirus is listed as the cause of death on the death certificate. There has been repeated criticism of this statistic.
Excess mortality in Russia between January and November was more than 13 percent compared to the same period last year. About 81 percent of the additional deaths were due to the coronavirus, Golikova now said.
