A negative corona test will be required for entry into England from next week. All travelers arriving by plane, train or ship will have to present proof of this, which must not be older than 72 hours, explained British Transport Minister Grant Shapps on Friday night. This is intended to prevent the spread of new Corona variants. Anyone who does not have a test must immediately pay a fine of 500 pounds (a good 550 euros).
There are exceptions for truck drivers, children under the age of eleven and entries from Ireland, among others. The announcement only affects England, but similar measures for the other parts of the U.K. – Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland – are expected to follow.
“We have already taken significant measures to prevent imported cases of Covid-19, but given the international spread of new strains of the virus, we need to take further precautions,” Shapps said. Pre-departure testing is another defensive measure, in addition to mandatory self-isolation after entry from another country, he said.
