U.S. President-elect Joe Biden went to church just before his swearing-in ceremony. Biden, a Catholic, was joined at the Cathedral of St. Matthew in Washington on Wednesday by Democratic and Republican leaders in the US Congress, among others. Television images showed those attending the service wearing masks and keeping their distance. The inauguration will take place at 6 p.m. (CET).

Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump had said goodbye from the U.S. capital in the afternoon with a brief appearance at the Andrews military base. There, the invited guests stood closely packed and wore no masks, as could be seen on video images. Trump will become the first president since 1869 to stay away from his successor’s inauguration.

Biden is the second Catholic to become president of the United States, after John F. Kennedy. Among others, the most important Republican in the U.S. Senate, Mitch McConnell, also went to church with him. He was among Trump’s most influential allies in recent years. McConnell, however, distanced himself from the outgoing president after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington.
