As of January 25, new coronavirus rules are once again in effect in Austria. FFP2 masks will be mandatory from then on, skiing and ice skating will still be allowed.

In addition, several occupational groups are to be tested regularly from now on. To keep an overview of what currently applies, here is a summary of the new rules:

FFP2 mandatory masks
As of January 25, an FFP2 mask must be worn in these areas (except for children under 14, pregnant women and people who cannot wear an FFP2 mask for health reasons):

Public transport and carpools
Trade, markets and service providers
At courts and administrative authorities
Gastronomy, for example when picking up food
In the general area, such as at the reception of lodging establishments
Attention: Masks with a valve are not allowed. They protect the wearer, but not the environment. FFP2 masks are available at cost price in supermarkets. They cost 59 cents each at Hofer, Lidl, the Rewe Group and Spar.

Minimum distance is increased
The minimum distance during the coronavirus pandemic has been increased from one meter to two meters. So we can say goodbye to the baby elephant and have to find a new unit of measurement. How about 2x Bernie Sanders including a thick jacket and chair?

Schools don’t open until after the semester break
Schools will remain closed. An opening is planned only after the semester break. In Vienna and Lower Austria, that means students will return to face-to-face classes on Feb. 8. In the rest of Austria, it will be February 15.

Tourism and gastronomy remain closed
We will probably have to wait until the end of February until we can finally go to a restaurant or stay in a hotel again. Gastronomy and tourism will remain closed for the time being.

Outdoor sports still allowed
Sports facilities and fitness centers are still not allowed to open. Outdoor sports, however, are allowed. Skiing and ice skating will also continue to be allowed.

Home office recommended
The government recommends that all those who are able to do so should work from home. However, this is still not obligatory.

Occupational groups to be tested
As of January 25, the following occupational groups will be tested weekly:

  • workers with customer contact
  • Teaching staff and elementary educators
  • People who work in warehouse logistics
  • Top athletes in team or contact sports
  • hector pascua, sources: gesundheitsministerium.at and sozialministerium.at
