The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns against using the approaching spring and higher temperatures as an argument for relaxing coronavirus measures. There is no evidence that weather and season directly influence the incidence of infection, a team of experts holds. It has looked into the question of what influence meteorological factors and air quality have on the pandemic.

The incidence of infection changes primarily as a result of protective measures, such as wearing masks and restricting travel, as well as behavioral changes. Viral infections of the respiratory tract are often seasonal, such as influenza, which is particularly common in the fall and winter, the experts write.

However, it is unclear whether the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus also behaves in this way. Little is known about the mechanisms that lead to seasonality in infections.

Experts said it is likely that a combination of factors come together: the influence of weather and season on the virus’ ability to survive, on people’s resistance, and on people’s behavior. Because people spend more time outdoors in warmer weather than in winter, the hope is that spring and summer will make it harder for the virus to spread.
