France has recorded more than 38,500 new infections with coronavirus within 24 hours – the most in almost four months. The French health authority reported 38,501 new infections in the evening. That was the highest figure in the country of nearly 67 million people since November.
The number of deaths increased by 246 to 91,427, and the number of coronavirus patients in intensive care units fell slightly to 4,219.
In view of the overcrowding in many French hospitals, the head of the government, Jean Castex, plans to make a statement today in Paris on a further tightening of conditions. According to the government, additional measures are planned in the greater Paris area and in the northern region of Hauts-de-France, which borders Belgium.
Among the measures under discussion are weekend curfews, which are already in place on the Cote d’Azur and in parts of northern France. A nightly curfew starting at 6 p.m. also applies throughout the country.
Slovakia extends state of emergency
The Slovakian government yesterday extended the state of emergency that has been in effect since October 1. It would have expired on Friday, but is now valid for another 40 days until April 28. The state of emergency allows authorities to, among other things, forcibly recruit and transfer health care workers and impose curfews.
The opposition accused the four-party coalition of populist-conservative Prime Minister Igor Matovic of abusing the state of emergency rules to ban protests.
At the same time, the government decided to ban tourist travel abroad, tightening existing exit restrictions. The cabinet did so in response to criticism of the previous emergency rules. These severely restricted movement within the country to curb the spread of the corona virus, but allowed foreign vacations.
