Austrian Government vaccination goal requires 43,000 initial vaccinations per day

Last week – after three weak weeks – brought a new vaccination record: with 331,581, more Corona vaccinations were registered than ever before.

200,000 vaccinations in three days

The second round of the special vaccination campaign in the Tyrolean district of Schwaz was also responsible for this. In the course of today, the number of 1.5 million vaccinated should also be exceeded. However, a significant increase to 43,000 initial vaccinations per day is necessary to achieve the vaccination target proclaimed by the government.

Up to and including Sunday, 2.1 million vaccine doses have been administered to 1.49 million people. This means 16.8 percent of the population has received at least their first jab. That represents 19.2 percent of the currently vaccine-eligible population aged 16 and older. The vaccination coverage rate is highest among those over 85, where 65.3 percent have received at least one dose and 54.7 percent have already received their second dose. This is followed by the over-75s (59.8 percent first vaccination) and the over-65s (29.7 percent).

Government target: significant increase in vaccinations needed
However, a significant increase in the number of vaccinations is needed to achieve the government’s target of giving at least two-thirds of the population their first dose by the end of June. Indeed, a total of 203,725 people received their first vaccination last week, an average of 29,103 per day. At this rate, the vaccination target would not be reached until August. What would be needed is just under 43,000 first vaccinations per day.

Slight acceleration in the pace of vaccination
However, the government expects 1.1 million vaccine doses to be available in the next three weeks, which should allow for a further slight acceleration of the vaccination pace. Among other things, the first 16,800 doses from Johnson & Johnson are expected this week, according to the Health Ministry’s website.

Pfizer’s active ingredient continues to be the backbone of the domestic vaccination program, with nearly seven out of 10 vaccinations delivered with it (69 percent). AstraZeneca accounted for less than one in four vaccinations (23 percent), and Moderna for less than one in ten (eight percent).

Second vaccinations: Particularly high uptake in Tyrol
There was a particularly high number of second vaccinations in Tyrol last week, where the special vaccination campaign in the district of Schwaz entered its second round. The district in the Tyrolean lowlands had received a special tranche from the European Union in the form of 100,000 vaccine doses because of the spread of the South African Corona variant. Around 50,000 people were called upon – after the first round in March – to be vaccinated a second time. In total, almost 65,000 vaccinations were registered in Tyrol last week, of which 49,000 were second vaccinations. In the whole of Austria, 203,725 first and 127,856 second vaccinations were registered.
