Even the first Corona vaccine dose reduces the risk of infection by 65 percent – regardless of the vaccine.

Even the first dose of vaccine reduces the risk of infection with corona virus by about two-thirds. This is the result of a large-scale study by Oxford University in cooperation with the British statistics authority ONS and the country’s Ministry of Health. Regardless of the vaccine – Biontech/Pfizer or AstraZeneca – the risk of coronavirus infection dropped by 65 percent three weeks after vaccination, according to the university on Friday.

Biontech/Pfizer and AstraZeneca both effective
The number of symptomatic infections, or covid-19 disease, dropped as much as 72 percent, according to the study. The study, which has not yet been published in a scientific journal, took into account the test results of around 370,000 people from the period between December 1 and April 3. Both vaccines were found to be as effective against the British variant B.1.1.7 as against the type originally circulating. The efficacy of the vaccines also did not change depending on the age or health status of the people.

The protective effect already achieved with the first dose supports the decision to extend the interval between the first and second doses to 12 weeks, said Koen Pouwels, one of the Oxford University scientists involved. However, he said, the new analysis also suggests that vaccinated individuals may continue to pass on infection – to a limited extent. That’s clear from the fact that the number of asymptomatic cases is not reduced at the same rate as the number of disease cases, he said. “This underscores the need for everyone to continue to follow the rules to minimize the risk of infection,” Pouwels said.
