Israel began on Sunday, 6 Juni vaccinating adolescents aged twelve to 15 against the coronavirus. The Health Ministry had previously said the dangers of contracting the disease outweighed the possible side effects of the vaccination. “Cases of myocarditis in 16- to 19-year-olds have been rare and have mostly passed without complications,” the statement said. The vaccine, made by Biontech and Pfizer, is used in Israel.
Given the extremely low rate of CoV infection in Israel, the ministry recommends vaccinating high-risk patients, relatives of high-risk patients and adolescents in families planning to travel abroad for the time being. “Apart from high-risk groups, anyone who is interested can be vaccinated,” it added.
Israel, a country of nine million people, has been successfully implementing a vaccination campaign since Dec. 19. Nearly 5.5 million have already received a primary vaccination and more than 5.1 million have received a secondary vaccination. New infections and severe illnesses declined sharply in recent months. Today, the Ministry of Health announced that only four new cases were registered within 24 hours. The number of serious cases fell to 230.
