About 194 million people have tested positive for the virus worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 4.1 million infected people have died. About 3.8 billion vaccine doses have been administered worldwide.

In Gibraltar, the number of new infections is rising despite high vaccination rates. The Tamedia newspapers report that the seven-day incidence on the peninsula is 600, with new infections affecting both vaccinated and unvaccinated people and largely due to the delta variant. However, the number of severe cases is low. According to official reports, the vaccination rate is 100 percent; in April, the head of government, Fabian Picardo, described Gibraltar as “Covid-free.” The actual vaccination rate is lower, however, because the number of vaccinations administered includes those doses that Gibraltar provided to about 8,000 Spanish commuters.

Tokyo Olympics
Tokyo Olympic organizers reported a total of three new infections around the Summer Games on Monday (7/26). There were a total of 16 other new infections around the Summer Games. This brought the number of positive tests at the Games to 148 since recording began on July 1. The organizers did not disclose which athletes were affected. In the German team there had been on the opening day in cyclist Simon Geschke the first Corona infected.

South Africa
In South Africa, some Corona restrictions are lifted. Weekday alcohol sales, inter-provincial passenger traffic and nighttime curfews from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. will be relaxed as daily infections show signs of declining. President Cyril Ramaphosa said Sunday (7/25) that the peak of the third wave has passed, although some provinces are still seeing an increase in cases. The government will open vaccination to people in the 18-34 age group starting Sept. 1.

Bazil
Thousands of Brazilians have again taken to the streets against the Corona policy of President Jair Bolsonaro’s government. In demonstrations Saturday (July 24), they demanded impeachment proceedings against the head of state, more vaccinations and economic aid, the news portal “G1” reported. Protests occurred in at least 13 provincial capitals, including Rio de Janeiro, Recife and Salvador. Bolsonaro downplayed the pandemic from the start and opposed tough curfews. Most recently, Bolsonaro also cast doubt on the wisdom of vaccinations.

France
Some 161,000 people demonstrated in Paris and other French cities on Saturday (July 24) against the tightening of Corona rules. This was reported by French media. According to the report, riots broke out in Paris on the fringes of the protest. Just Friday (7/23), the National Assembly had approved a bill to extend the requirement for proof of a negative Corona test, vaccination or recovery. Thus, the certificate will become necessary from August for the use and visit of long-distance trains, bars, restaurants and shopping centers. The deputies also gave their approval to a planned mandatory vaccination for healthcare workers in the first reading. Now the Senate must approve the new regulations.

England
Due to massive staff shortages in many areas, the British government has relaxed the Corona quarantine rules for further occupational groups. Thus, in England, train drivers, border guards or firefighters who have had contact with Corona infected people are now allowed to test themselves daily instead of going into quarantine. This was announced by the government on Saturday (24. 7.). Initially, these special rules had applied only to health care workers and later to food service workers.

USA
The US is buying another 200 million doses of Corona vaccine from manufacturers Biontech and Pfizer. With this, the government is making preparations for the vaccination of younger children and possibly necessary booster shots for adults, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki explained on Friday (23. 7.). Just over half of the doses are expected to be delivered by the end of the year, with the remainder to be delivered by April 2022, meaning 500 million doses have been ordered by the U.S. government so far out of options of up to 600 million. In addition, the U.S. government has ordered 500 million doses to be given to other countries. It has already begun shipping vaccine doses from manufacturers Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, Astrazeneca and Pfizer/Biontech. This week alone, 22 million doses have been shipped, Psaki said.
