A study has examined the impact of the Corona pandemic on the quality of relationships.
The Corona pandemic has no effect on the quality of relationships. Rather, “mundane psychological factors” such as security are responsible for happiness in a partnership.
This was the conclusion reached by a research team led by Stephanie Eder from the University of Vienna. In their study, the scientists interviewed around 300 people from Austria, Poland, Spain and the Czech Republic in spring 2020.
With her country-comparative survey over seven weeks, the researcher from the Faculty of Life Sciences shed light on the effects of various crisis measures on the quality of relationships. “It was very surprising to me that the different crisis situations had no effect on relationship quality,” Eder told APA.
The decisive factor for a good relationship – especially during times of crisis – is the attachment style: “The more secure people can feel in relationships, the more likely couples are to survive difficult situations, such as the corona pandemic,” the scientist said. In partnerships characterized by insecurity, on the other hand, conflicts accumulate, which additionally leads to a reduction in relationship quality, according to a conclusion from the study.
“The duration of partnerships has no influence, but the age of those involved does. This was unexpected for me,” Eder said. Younger people are more satisfied in their relationships than older people, he said. This could be attributed to a sharpened eye for the negative sides of the partner in old age, he said. While the number of years of life unexpectedly showed an effect, sexuality was apparently not important for the quality of a relationship.
