Austrians will probably need a Corona vaccination booster starting in the fall. The federal government announced that this will be start in nursing homes and risk groups, as soon as the experts recommend it and the approval is given on the European level. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein announced.
Kurz and Mückstein expect “new scientific findings on the need for a third vaccination soon,” they said in a statement Friday. Preparations are already being made with the provincial vaccination coordinators. “The top priority is to protect the elderly and vulnerable groups. We expect a quick information from the EMA on the need for a third vaccination against the coronavirus. In any case, we are prepared and have agreed with the country vaccination coordinators that we can start the third vaccination immediately after a possible recommendation. I will also ask Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to ensure that this issue is prioritized at the European level,” Chancellor Kurz said.
“Based on the current data, we assume that a booster vaccination will be necessary after nine months at the earliest. The National Vaccination Panel is constantly monitoring developments here. At the moment, however, it is particularly important that as many people as possible complete their vaccination protection – only then will they have the best possible protection against Delta. In parallel, we are in any case prepared for the third vaccination,” explained Mückstein. The Austrian government also wants to exchange information with those countries where the third vaccination is already underway or being planned, such as Israel or Germany.
