Many groups around the world are researching a vaccine. About a dozen of them are to be taken seriously. Those scientists who are working on a so-called messenger RNA are doing very well. The explanation: information is transported into the human body, causing it to build antigens itself. As a result, it also produces antibodies against the pathogen itself.
Prof. Dr. Michael Kunze, a social health professional and vaccination expert, expects more targeted effects, fewer side effects and: “It is possible to produce larger quantities. This will be decisive! In Austria alone we need millions of doses, worldwide it may take billions. But what if it goes wrong with the vaccine? What if the virus changes in such a way that you have to go back to the start? This happened already with HIV.“
Vaccination will be a challenge
“Unfortunately, I have no answer to another question: What happens if there is too little vaccine? Which countries are preferred, which people in a country? The elderly? The young? The sick? I am in favour of protecting the medical staff first. Then at least the medical care is guaranteed”, says Kunze.
From an organizational point of view, there is also a challenge waiting for us that should not be underestimated – four million people have never been vaccinated in Austria before. “Although vaccination routes are planned – but does that also work in practice? The best thing is to remain optimistic and wait for a suitable vaccine and medication. That’s all we can do anyway. Wait, that’s not quite right: We should get numerous vaccinations when the time comes.”
