World Weather Organization warns of hot summer: New records expected in the northern hemisphere
Geneva – The World Weather Organization (WMO) warns of a heat summer in the northern hemisphere that could break records. Already in the early months of the year, everything pointed to 2020 being one of the hottest years since measurements began, WMO spokeswoman Clare Nullis said in Geneva.
Cities and municipalities must now prepare to protect people – even if the coronavirus pandemic makes this more complicated. In other years, she said, people in overheated homes had been advised to go to cooled shopping centres, for example. Neighbours were encouraged to visit people living alone and those who might be at risk regularly. Now, many Corona suggestions, such as staying at home if possible, would argue against this. In addition, hospitals might be less well prepared for patients with heat stroke because they have to treat corona patients.
Together with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners, the WMO offers an online information package with ideas. A brochure of the German Federal Environment Agency recommends, among other things, to wear a broad-brimmed hat outside if possible, to drink enough, to let cool water run down your wrists, to put cool, to rub your feet and back with rubbing alcohol, and to switch off electrical appliances and artificial lighting as a heat source.
