The international pharmaceutical group AstraZeneca plans to launch a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year. This vaccine is to be available worldwide “at cost price”, as the company’s boss, Pascal Soriot, told the French radio station RTL. One unit is to be sold for 2.50 euros.
“Our goal is to make the vaccine available to all people,” Soriot said. The company hopes to produce a vaccine by the end of the year. “Maybe a little earlier if all goes well,” Soriot added.
Promising test results
Only on Monday, a study in the trade magazine “The Lancet” had raised high hopes for the vaccine developed jointly by AstraZeneca and the British University of Oxford. In the first two test series, the substance proved to be well tolerated by the test persons and ensured the formation of antibodies as well as immunization against the lung disease Covid-19 triggered by the pathogen SARS-CoV-2. The results of a third test phase are expected in the fall. If successful, the substance can then be produced and administered on a mass scale.
Meanwhile, a Chinese vaccine manufacturer started the third phase of testing its active substance in Brazil on Tuesday. According to a doctor in a hospital in Sao Paulo, the first volunteers received the vaccine, whose effectiveness was proven in the first two phases, as reported by “The Lancet”.
