From now on the mouth nose protection must be worn upon entering the buildings of the public transport system.
Wiener Linien is adapting its corona protection measures to the requirements of the federal government: Immediately the mouth nose protection applies not only in the vehicles and on the subway platforms, but in all Viennese lines buildings upon entering the entrance area.
“The fact is: The mask obligation in the Öffis helps us to prevent infections and the spread of the Sars-CoV-2 – even with high person frequency, says the environmental physician Hans-Peter Hutter of the medical University of Vienna. Therefore it makes sense “to extend the obligation to wear masks to the entire area”.

According to the Vienna Public Transport Authority (Wiener Linien), mouth and nose protection is also obligatory in the information and ticket offices and in the customer center in Erdberg.

Strict controls of the mask obligation
So far, more than 55,000 warnings have been issued against persons who had not complied with the obligation to wear masks. 198 fines have been imposed. These are however only the last consequence. In addition to a fine of 50 euros, one is also excluded from continuing the journey.

The safety precautions are checked by 130 security employees – around the clock, the public transport operator says, they make sure that passengers obey the rules and wear masks. In addition to the security service, more than 200 service employees and 150 civilian control officers are on the road with the Wiener Linien.

According to the City of Vienna, not a single chain of infection can be traced back to the public transport system. Wiener Linien cleans and disinfects all vehicles and surfaces with which passengers come into contact on a daily basis. The first doors on buses and high-floor streetcars have been closed for months. This is to guarantee the minimum distance between driver and passengers.
