U6 Shutdowns and Tram Disruptions: Vienna Braces for Months of Autumn Construction Work

Vienna commuters face a new wave of public transport disruptions this autumn as the Wiener Linien begin extensive track and station renovations across several districts. Starting in September, multiple tram lines will be rerouted, sections suspended, and the U6 station Neue Donau partially closed for more than two years.

Major Track Works Begin in Floridsdorf

One of the largest projects launches on 8 September along Donaufelder Straße, where around 1,100 meters of track will be replaced. The Carminweg stop will be widened and modernized.

From 14 September until the end of December, tram lines 25, 26 and 27 will not operate between Josef-Baumann-Gasse and Floridsdorf:

25: Runs from Aspern, Oberdorfstraße to Josef-Baumann-Gasse, then continues on the 27 route to Aspern Nord.
26: Operates from Hausfeldstraße via Josef-Baumann-Gasse to Kagran.
27: Limited to Strebersdorf–Floridsdorf.
26E: A replacement bus connects Floridsdorf and Josef-Baumann-Gasse.

Car traffic will also be restricted: between 8 September and late December, Donaufelder Straße will only be passable from Floridsdorf toward Josef-Baumann-Gasse.

Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus: Gleis Renewal Shuts Down Line 49

Further disruptions hit Huglgasse and Märzstraße starting 14 September. From 21 September to 31 October, no trams will run between Hütteldorfer Straße and Schweglerstraße.

49: Suspended for the entire period.
46: Extended from Hütteldorfer Straße to Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse.
52: Extended from Urban-Loritz-Platz to Parliament/Volkstheater.
Additional alternatives: Line 9, U3, and a rerouted 12A via Schweglerstraße.

Line D: Partial Suspension Through Mid-November

From 28 September to mid-November, tram D will operate only on two shortened segments:

Nußdorf–Augasse
Börse–Absberggasse

The central section will be closed for track renewal.

Line 1: Detour Through Favoriten

Starting 27 October, tram 1 will be diverted due to works in Windtenstraße. Until mid-December, it will run from Knöllgasse to Reumannplatz, skipping the stretch between Knöllgasse and Stefan-Fadinger-Platz.

Passengers are advised to use 7A and 65A buses as alternatives.

U6: Neue Donau Station Closed in One Direction Until 2026

A long-term disruption begins 14 September on the U6: the Neue Donau station will be closed in the direction of Floridsdorf until late 2026.

Towards Siebenhirten: Station remains open.
Towards Floridsdorf: Trains will pass through without stopping.
Passengers traveling from Floridsdorf can ride one stop further and return on a southbound train.

The renovation includes new platform surfaces, improved waterproofing, updated tactile guidance for visually impaired passengers, and modernized platform edges. In 2027, works will continue on the opposite platform.

According to Wiener Linien, 12.5 kilometers of track and 33 switches will be renewed across the network in 2026.
