The number of corona deaths in India has risen to more than 100,000. This makes the subcontinent the third country in the world after the USA and Brazil to exceed this mark. Together, these three nations account for almost 45 percent of the over one million corona deaths worldwide. So far, 207,060 people in the USA have succumbed to the consequences of the corona virus, 145,388 in Brazil, and the Indian authorities reported a total of 100,842 corona deaths on Saturday.
The number of infections was 6.47 million, an increase of 79,476 within one day. No other country in the world has seen such a rapid increase in daily infection rates. Nevertheless, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is implementing its plans to revive the economy. Numerous measures in the context of the lockdown are being reversed. For example, cinemas were allowed to open again with half the number of spectators. From the middle of this month, local authorities will be allowed to decide whether to allow lessons in schools again.
In view of the approaching winter and numerous religious festivals, experts anticipate a further increase in infections. By the end of the year a good twelve million people could be infected with the virus, said Bhramar Mukherjee, professor of biostatistics and epidemiology at the University of Michigan.
Despite the high number of infections, the death rate in India is significantly lower than in the USA or Brazil. On average, less than one person per 10,000 infected persons died in India. In Brazil and the USA, this figure was six deaths per 10,000 infected persons. This has raised doubts about the accuracy of the data. US President Donald Trump, for example, accused India of reporting fewer deaths than there were. A representative of the Center for Infectious Disease Research at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore admitted that there could be inaccuracies. “In India, even without a pandemic, not all deaths are properly recorded,” said Shashank Tripathi. Officials such as the Ministry of Health were initially unable to comment on this.
Meanwhile, the Italian health authorities recorded growth in coronavirus infections again. 2,844 new cases were registered in 24 hours, compared to 2,499 the day before. 27 deaths were also reported, four more than on Friday. The number of deaths since the beginning of the epidemic in February thus rose to 35,968. 118,932 swabs were taken on Saturday.
The number of confirmed active cases climbed to 55,566, while the number of Covid 19 patients treated in hospitals rose from 3,142 to 3,205, the Italian Ministry of Health announced on Saturday. There were 297 patients in intensive care units, three more than the day before.
In view of the increasing number of new corona infections nationwide, an outdoor mask requirement came into force on Saturday in the Lazio region including the capital Rome. Children under six years of age and people who do sports outside are exempt. Similar regulations already apply in the regions of Campania, Calabria and Sicily.
In Poland, the number of new corona infections reached a record level for the third day in a row. On Saturday, the authorities recorded 2,367 new infections within 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health in Warsaw. With 290 cases, the main focus was on Lesser Poland in the south of the country, but the region around the capital Warsaw (277) and Pomerania in the west (244) were also severely affected. It was only on Friday that the previous record since the beginning of the pandemic was recorded, with 2,292 new infections.
In Slovakia, too, a record number of new corona infections was again recorded. The number of cases registered within 24 hours was 704, the National Health Information Center announced on Saturday. This was the highest figure since the outbreak of the pandemic in March. The previous peak was recorded one day earlier, with 679 cases.
