In view of the increasing number of corona infections throughout Austria, Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) addressed the federal states with a written appeal on Thursday. In several of them, he said, the figures had reached a “very worrying level”. Tighter measures were urgently needed there.
“We are currently seeing a massive spread of the virus in some cities and countries in Europe, which makes it necessary to fight it with very drastic measures,” said the Chancellor in the text submitted to the APA: “It must be clear to everyone in the country: The situation is serious.” A new infection rate such as in the neighboring Czech Republic would have fatal consequences for jobs and companies, would push the health care system to the limits of its capacity and would de facto cause a second lockdown.
“Now it is important that the federal states that are particularly affected make tighter restrictions in the regions, because from a certain point on, neither quick tests nor targeted contact tracing for the authorities in the affected states will be possible,” Kurz emphasized.

He also addressed the population: “I appeal to all people in the country to take the situation seriously and support the measures. The coming weeks would decide whether the spread of the virus could be slowed and contained, or whether the corona pandemic would cause even greater damage to the healthcare system, jobs and companies in the country, the Chancellor said.
